This weekend is the 15th Annual Lawnmower Races located at Bowles Farms. What an absolutely wonderful event! The proceeds from the races go to support the 7th District Optimist Club and the 7th District Rescue Squad. This year’s lawnmower races is a record breaking race for St. Mary’s County! I was told there were 138 lawnmowers there to race from 13 different states. The Friday night crowd was huge and it was an all around family friendly great event. If you’ve never seen lawnmower races before, they are legit! There are different classes of lawnmowers with different qualifications (engine size, power, governors, etc) and age groups. The racers compete in races all around the country, but I’ve heard multiple racers comment that this is by-far one of their favorite races because of how well run it is and how well the Bowles family treats them!
There is a huge amount of work that goes into making this event such a big success. The Bowles family hosting this event is key to the success–the venue is perfect, but they put in countless hours to make it so. Both the Rescue Squad and the Optimist Club volunteers work for months to pull this off. One of my favorite things about the lawnmower races is that while it is a fundraiser it is also a community event–everyone enjoyed gathering together outside and supporting a great cause while having fun. Delegate Matt Morgan did a great job as one of the announcers and Senator Jack Bailey helped out with the 50/50 raffle (also record setting for this event!).
If you haven’t been, make sure you put it on your calendar–you won’t be disappointed!
