Commissioner Update – March 8, 2022

Today’s meeting started with the Invocation and Pledge followed by the Approval of the Consent Agenda. We then presented a Proclamation for Women’s History Month.

Our one Main Agenda item was to approve a request for a Public Hearing to change the zoning for 41170 Oakville Road, Mechanicsville from Rural Preservation to Rural Commercial Limited. The hearing will be in the morning on March 29th.

Moving into County Administrator Time, we started by reviewing upcoming Meeting Agendas. Second we approved and certified individuals qualifying for the 2021 Length of Service Awards (LOSAP) service credit—thank you to this incredible group of volunteers who make our community safe! Third we approved the FY2023 Inter-Governmental Agreement with the Maryland State Department of Social Services for the Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) I, II, and III grants – this agreement contributes $80,000 to our STS System for transportation services. Fourth we approved an ordinance establishing a 40 mph speed limit on Steer Horn Neck Road and asked the Department of Public Works to do a traffic study of the area. Fifth we approved an ordinance rescinding the no-parking ordinance in the South Woods Estates Subdivision. Our final item of County Administrator business was approval of the employment contract for the Animal Shelter Division Manager—welcome to the team Theresa Marlowe!

Next we heard Legislative Updates from the County Attorney’s Office. We approved letters of support for a group of bills dealing with Cybersecurity.

We finished the meeting with Commissioner’s Time—I spoke about the incredible volunteers in our county and the emerging Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Maryland and practicing good flock biosecurity. We then entered into Closed Session to discuss Personnel for Boards, Committees and Commissions. We then held a Memorial Service for Francis Leroy Williams, a former Recreation and Parks and STS employee who passed away on September 11, 2021.

This afternoon we held another Budget Work Session to discuss Elected Officials Budget Requests, including the Sheriff’s Office, State’s Attorney’s Office, Treasurer, Circuit Court and Orphan’s Court.
